• 1972-1974, after graduating from Ann Arbor alternative high-school, Earthworks, a term early, lived in Ann Arbor, and Nova Scotia and New Brunswick, Canada, immersed in learning guitar, banjo, tinwhistle and repertoire from various folk and blues traditions

  • 1974, won the blue ribbon at an old-tyme banjo competition in Kalamazoo, Michigan

  • 1975, dropped out of college (The University of Michigan) after one term, walking out of Psychology 101, to spend more time with musical instruments

  • 1977-78, worked as Artist in Residence for the City of Atlanta, Georgia
